“Moving Forward with Hope: Love and Justice for Every Child.”
Light a Candle for Children is an advocacy and prayer vigil that begins September 10, five weeks before the National Observance of Children’s Sabbath on October 22, and is sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, DC. Thousands of congregations from multiple faith groups unite during Children’s Sabbath to simultaneously witness for children through prayer, education, and worship.
The Light a Candle Prayer Vigil uses a different focus scripture each week related to the overall theme in preparation for Children’s Sabbath. The focus scriptures for 2017 are:
- Week of September 25: John 6:9-11, Be an Example of Hope
- Week of October 2: Hebrews 13:1-2, Be an Example of Justice
- Week of October 9: 1 Thessalonians 1:4-8, Be an Example of Love
- Week of October 16: John 21:15, Be an Example for Every Child
