We are in immediate need of a bass player and a lead electric guitar player. We currently have a keyboardist (me), but would like to find someone to take that over. Also, we would like a back-up for our acoustic guitar and drums. If you are interested, please contact me at (765) 282-5969 ext. 12, or email me at hccmgill@gmail.com. We have a very informal audition process. The ability to read music/chord charts is a huge plus. We have a great family atmosphere here at Hazelwood, and we would like you to join our family.

Our Hazelwood book club has selected some great reads for the upcoming months. We welcome new members at any time. No reservation needed. Just show up, and share your thoughts with us. We love to discuss books! The book club meets the first Thursday of each month, at 6 p.m., in the Hazelwood Library. Upcoming selections:

MARCH Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell’s famed story of love, loss, and triumph in the Civil War south.

APRIL Lost December by Richard Paul Evans ~ When Luke Crisp graduates from business school, his father, CEO and co-founder of Fortune 500 Crisp’s Copy Centers, is ready to share some good news: he wants to turn the family business over to his son. But Luke has other plans. Taking control of his trust fund, Luke leaves home to pursue a life of reckless indulgence. Lost December is Richard Paul Evans’s modern day holiday version of the biblical story of the prodigal son, a powerful tale of redemption, hope and the true meaning of love.

MAY The Lucky One by Nicholas Spark ~ Is there really such a thing as a lucky charm? The hero of Nicholas Sparks’ new book believes he’s found one in the form of a photograph of a smiling woman he’s never met, but who he comes to believe holds the key to his destiny. The chain of events that leads to his possessing the photograph and finding the woman pictured in it, is the stuff of love stories only a master such as Sparks can write.

JUNE My Last Days as Roy Rogers by Pat Cunningham Devoto ~ In an Alabama town in the early 1950’s during the last polio summer before the Salk vaccine, ten-year-old Tabitha “Tab” Rutland is about to have the time of her life. Although movie theaters and pools have been closed to stem the epidemic, Tab, a tomboy with a passion for Roy Rogers, still seeks adventure with her best friend, Maudie May, “the lightest brown colored person she knows.” As they snoop into the town’s darkest secrets, Tab sets out to be a hero…and comes of age in an unforgettable confrontation with human frailty, racial injustice, and the healing power of love.

JULY Courageous by Randy Alcorn ~ As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer, yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle, fatherhood. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children begin to drift farther away from them. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering.

Hazelwood’s Christian Education committee would like to invite you to CUBED. This February, we will be gathering for three weeks, for three reasons. Sunday evenings, February 12, 19, and 26 from 5-7 p.m., we will gather in Cartwright Hall for fellowship, study, and worship. A light snack supper will be provided beginning at 5 p.m. We will then study God’s word, both together and in small groups. There will be opportunities for adults of all ages, as well as our youth. We will then come together for communion service at the end of each evening. Child care will be provided for youth up to 5th grade.

The book we have chosen to base our study on is a great look at the Holy Spirit, and how we might better understand this great gift God has given each of us. The title of the book is “Remembering the Forgotten God,” by Francis Chan. Books can be purchased at the Christian Bookstore in Muncie; through Amazon – $9.00 for Kindle or i-Pad; or you can order one through the church for $10.00. There are also a couple of copies available at the Public Library.

We have all learned that three is a blessed number in the Bible, and we pray it will be a blessed number for each of us as we study God’s word during these three Sundays. We pray this will be a great discussion-based study as we all learn more about the Holy Spirit together.

Please RSVP to the church, either by returning the form in your bulletin, or by calling the church office, no later than Sunday, February 5 so we know how many books we need to order, and how much food to plan for. We hope to see you there.

Yes, I/we will be attending CUBED February 12, 19, and 26 from 5-7 p.m.____

Dr. David Cartwright, Minister Emeritus, recently published his second book of sermons. “Eyes of Faith” is a collection of ten sermons based on the Gospel texts from the Revised Common Lectionary.
The dedication includes Rev. Floyd Emshwiller, Dr. Earl Davis, Rev. Randall Campbell and Dr. Robert Sulanke, all from the Hazelwood family. A book signing has been set for Sunday, March 4, prior to Taters and Talent (at 5 p.m.). Sign up for purchase of books will be held during coffee fellowship on February 12 and February 19.

Cost of the book is $13.00, of which five dollars will be a donation to Hazelwood Christian Preschool.

During the past 143 years of our existence, the Hazelwood congregation has established a rich heritage of exceptional ministry, service, and community outreach involvement. However, during the past few years to the present, we have seen a change in our ministry due to declining numbers in worship attendance, in the number of leaders and volunteers stepping forward to serve, and a physical plant that requires increasing expenditures to maintain, which is not being supported by congregational giving.

We find ourselves at a crossroads in our history, and we must make significant changes in order to sustain the ministry and simply survive for the long run. Change is inevitable, and at times necessary, but that doesn’t make it less uncomfortable or less painful.

As we consider how we go forward, nothing can be sacred, We cannot maintain the status quo. Every aspect of our congregational life must be examined and considered. New, even radical ideas and approaches must be generated which will allow us to sustain and grow the ministry, and serve others as God would have us do.

In response to the congregational assessment conducted by Rick Morse, we have established times for the congregation to come together in small groups for Visioning Conferences. We would like everyone’s participation. We will come together for some brain-storming and visioning for our future together. Everyone’s opinion is valuable.

The dates and times will be: Sunday, February 5, 1 p.m.; Tuesday, February 7, 7 p.m.; Friday, February 10, 10 a.m.; and Sunday, February 12, 1 p.m. We are limiting the number in each group to 15 people. More groups will be added as needed. The sessions will be held in the Sulanke Fellowship House.

You can sign up to attend one of these meetings. Sign up sheets are available on Sundays, and in the church office through the week. Please take the time to participate in these important meetings for the future of our congregation. Each meeting will have a specific agenda, and leaders to facilitate. Make your voice heard, it’s important.
